Walk the Stuart Highway yards between Winnellie and Pinelands and the pattern is obvious: dual-cab utes, LandCruisers with bull bars and spotlights, and touring wagons that look ready for the Gibb. In the Top End a ute or 4WD is often the sensible choice, not the lifestyle one. It also means a used one usually comes with a story worth hearing: where it's been, what it's towed and how it's been looked after.
We picked five Darwin dealerships from CDR's researched profiles whose stock and services suit ute and 4WD buyers, spread from Stuart Park to Tivendale. Two sell new vehicles with factory backing; three are used yards with a clear 4WD lean. Stock moves quickly, so check each dealer's own website before you visit. The NT rules below will help you buy with confidence.
The NT rules worth knowing first
The Northern Territory has no statutory cooling-off period on car purchases, although a dealer can keep no more than 10% if a deal falls through. Used vehicles under 10 years old and under 160,000 km get a statutory warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km, and it can only be waived using Form 12, which must be read out and witnessed by NT Police or Consumer Affairs. That safeguard means nobody gives up the cover by accident.
Towing is the other big one. Tell the dealer about the van, boat or trailer and its loaded weight early, so they can match you to the right vehicle, and have it noted on the paperwork. The consumer guarantees back that conversation up: the ACCC treats a vehicle that can't do a job you told the dealer about as a possible major failure.
Patrol and Navara from a long-standing local
Kerry Nissan · Stuart Park, Northern Territory
Kerry Nissan has traded from 17-25 Stuart Highway, Stuart Park, since 1988 as a family owned and operated business within the Kerry Auto Group. It sells new, demonstrator and used Nissans, and for this brief the Patrol and Navara are the draw, alongside the Qashqai and X-Trail.
The dealership runs its own service department with online booking, a genuine parts catalogue, a dedicated fleet team and a Sell Your Car trade-in program. It's a single-brand franchise, so it suits buyers already set on Nissan. The separately branded Kerry Holden shares the same address block.

- Ask whether the vehicle carries the NT statutory warranty. It can only be waived on a witnessed Form 12.
- Commercial vehicles are often excluded from state and territory statutory warranties, so ask whether the ute you're buying qualifies.
- NT duty is $3 per $100 of the purchase price, including accessories, plus a $22 transfer of ownership fee.
- Run a $2 PPSR check on the VIN close to the day you pay.
- Get the towing and payload figures for the exact vehicle, with any accessories fitted.
The bottom line
Darwin gives ute and 4WD buyers plenty of choice, from Ford and Nissan franchises with factory backing to used yards stacked with LandCruisers and HiLuxes. Talk through the history of any used vehicle, ask about the accessories fitted and tell the dealer what you plan to tow. With those answers in hand, you'll drive out with a vehicle ready for the Top End.
Quick answers
Is there a cooling-off period when buying a car in the NT?
No. The Northern Territory has no statutory cooling-off period, but a dealer can't keep more than 10% if the deal falls through.
Can I lose my statutory warranty in the NT?
Only through Form 12, which must be read out to you and witnessed by NT Police or Consumer Affairs. That process means the cover can't be given up by accident.
What does the NT statutory warranty cover?
Used vehicles under 10 years old and under 160,000 km get 3 months or 5,000 km of cover. Commercial vehicles are often excluded, so ask whether a ute qualifies.
How much is stamp duty on a vehicle in the NT?
Duty is $3 per $100, or 3%, of the purchase price including extra equipment and accessories. Use the NT duty calculator for your figure.
What if my 4WD can't tow what I told the dealer?
The ACCC treats that as a possible major failure under the consumer guarantees, so tell the dealer your towing needs up front and have them noted.
