The CDR Five

First car, sorted: five Canberra dealerships for first-car buyers

From a small Gungahlin yard to the Melrose Drive precinct in Phillip, five Canberra dealerships whose stock and services suit someone buying their first car.

Buying a first car is a milestone, and in Canberra the costs are refreshingly easy to map out. In the ACT, motor vehicle duty is worked out on the car's value and its tailpipe emissions, a Motor Accident Injuries premium is paid with registration, and the car has to be transferred and the duty paid within 14 days of buying it.

A good first dealership brings all of that together in a clear drive-away figure, so you can pick a car that fits your budget with everything included. We picked five Canberra dealerships from CDR's researched profiles that list first-car buyers among the people they suit, from small independent yards to new-car franchises. Treat it as a shortlist, and confirm current stock and pricing on each dealer's own website.

What the ACT gives a first-car buyer

The ACT is a reassuring place to buy a first car. Its cooling-off period is 3 clear business days on any motor vehicle bought from a dealer, and cancelling costs the greater of $100 or 1% of the price. The right ends if you sign a loss-of-right form before delivery, so only sign one once you've decided you don't need the extra days.

Used cars up to 10 years old and 160,000 km carry a statutory warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km from a licensed dealer, and any attempt to contract out of it is void. Duty on a used car under $45,000 is charged at $3.17 per $100 for most cars, or $2.50 per $100 for a zero-emission car, so a greener first car can cost a little less to put on the road.

A Phillip yard priced from $5,888

Canberry Cars · Phillip, Australian Capital Territory

Canberry Cars is an independent used-car dealer on Divine Court in Phillip, carrying fewer than 20 vehicles at a time across Ford, Holden, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda and Mitsubishi. Its range has spanned model years from 2006 to 2025, priced from roughly $5,888 to $25,888, and the dealership describes its focus as matching customers to cars that suit their budget.

That price spread covers a lot of first-car territory. It's a small yard, so call ahead to talk through warranty and trade-in options, and ask about the history of any car that catches your eye.

John McGrath MG Phillip · Phillip, Australian Capital Territory

If the budget stretches to new, John McGrath MG Phillip on Melrose Drive sells the current MG range, from the MG3 light hatch through the ZS and HS SUVs to electric models including the MG4 and MGS5 EV. Running costs

When you compare cars, look past the purchase price to fuel, servicing, tyres and registration, and check the car's ANCAP rating alongside its test datestamp. In the ACT the Motor Accident Injuries premium is paid with registration, so a written drive-away price that includes it gives you the full on-road figure.

The ACT's official licence pages we checked don't list a high-powered vehicle restriction for provisional car licences, but confirm with Access Canberra before you buy anything with serious performance.

The bottom line

Canberra's first-car market runs from sub-$10,000 used hatches on independent lots to new light cars in the Phillip precinct. Whichever end you shop, ask for the drive-away figure, take comfort from the ACT's cooling-off and warranty rules, and ask about each used car's history. Then enjoy the drive home.
