A first car in Cairns has a short but unforgiving brief. It has to survive the heat and the wet, get you to work or uni without drama, and cost little enough to run on a first pay packet. Getting that balance right is easier with a dealership that's used to helping first-time buyers, and Cairns has a good spread of them.
We went through CDR's researched Cairns profiles and picked five dealerships whose stock and services suit first-car buyers, from sub-$10,000 used yards to a new-car franchise. Treat this as a shortlist, not a final answer, and confirm current stock and prices on each dealer's own website.
The Queensland rules a first-time buyer needs
P-plates limit the car. Queensland P1 and P2 drivers under 25 can't drive high-powered vehicles. For cars built from 1 January 2010, that means more than 130 kW per tonne, or approved engine modifications. Older cars are caught by other criteria, including eight or more cylinders and turbocharged or supercharged petrol engines. Use the Queensland Government's high-powered vehicle status check before you pay a deposit.
The warranty depends on age and kilometres. A used car from a Queensland dealer with under 160,000 km, built no more than 10 years before the sale, carries a statutory warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km. Older or higher-kilometre cars get 1 month or 1,000 km. Consignment sales are often outside statutory warranty schemes, so it's worth asking your dealer how any car you like is being sold.
Budget for the on-road costs. Queensland duty on a four-cylinder car is $3 per $100, so $360 on a $12,000 car. Registration includes compulsory third party insurance, and an itemised drive-away price shows the duty and registration together.

Cairns Coastal Cars · Portsmith, Queensland
Cairns Coastal Cars is a family-owned used-car dealership on Draper Street in Portsmith, with fewer than 20 vehicles typically in stock. It stocks mainstream brands including Toyota, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Kia and Volkswagen, with advertised prices from $11,990 to $39,990 and most clustered between $15,000 and $26,000.
The yard emphasises inspecting each vehicle and checking its service history before sale, which is exactly what a first-time buyer can't easily do alone. Finance is offered, with trade-ins and cash offers. Ask which warranty applies to the specific car, because Queensland's cover differs by age and kilometres.

- Run the Queensland high-powered vehicle status check if the driver is on P-plates and under 25.
- Check the ANCAP rating and its datestamp. For a first car, a recent safety rating matters more than features.
- Run a $2 PPSR search before you pay, to check for finance owing and written-off records.
- Queensland cooling-off on a used car runs until 5pm on the dealer's next trading day and costs $100, but driving the car away ends it.
The bottom line
There's no single right dealership for a first car in Cairns, only the right fit for your budget. A weekday budget yard, a sub-$10,000 specialist, a history-checked mid-range lot, a new-car franchise and a long-running independent each suit a different first-time buyer. Whichever you choose, check the car is legal for your licence, get a drive-away price, and run the $2 PPSR search for peace of mind. Then go and enjoy the test drive.
