Cheaper duty, no rebate: five Brisbane dealerships for EV and hybrid buyers

Queensland still charges less duty on hybrids and electric cars, but the state rebate is long gone. Five Brisbane dealerships whose stock and services suit a buyer going electrified, from a fixed-price used superstore to a Japanese import specialist.

Walk into a Brisbane showroom asking about an electric car and the first thing worth knowing is that the numbers have shifted. Queensland's zero emission vehicle rebate closed to applications at 11:59pm on 2 September 2024, and there's no state purchase rebate to replace it.

What Queensland does still give electrified buyers is cheaper stamp duty. Hybrid and electric light vehicles pay $2 per $100 of value up to $100,000, against $3 for a four-cylinder petrol car. On a $50,000 purchase that's $1,000 in duty instead of $1,500. Not life-changing, but real money.

The numbers worth knowing first

Above $100,000 the hybrid and electric rate rises to $4 per $100, still a dollar under the four-cylinder rate. Fuel-efficient vehicles also have their own luxury car tax threshold, $91,661 in 2026-27.

The Australian Government's Green Vehicle website has a fuel cost calculator and a home charging calculator. Run both with your own driving before you settle on petrol, hybrid, plug-in or full electric.

How we chose these five

These five come from CDR's researched Brisbane profiles, each listing electric or hybrid buyers among the people the dealership suits. We picked across new, demonstrator, certified pre-owned, used and imported stock, one per dealer group, spread from the inner north to the southside. Treat it as a shortlist to start from and confirm current stock and pricing on each dealer's own website.

Questions to ask on an electrified car

On a new EV or hybrid, an itemised drive-away figure shows the lower duty rate at work. On anything used, ask what warranty remains on the high-voltage battery as well as the car, and get it in writing. Queensland's statutory warranty for dealer used cars runs 3 months or 5,000 km for Class A cars, and demonstrators may already have used part of the factory warranty, so ask when it started.

Charging is the other half of the decision. The Green Vehicle website notes that a standard wall outlet charges slowly, a dedicated home outlet charges faster, and average daily driving of 33 to 38 km is well within most EV ranges. If you can't charge at home or work, a hybrid may be the easier fit.

The bottom line

Brisbane EV and hybrid buyers won't get a state rebate, but they do get a lower duty rate and a genuine spread of options, from new Hyundai and Lexus electrified ranges to fixed-price used stock and budget Japanese imports. Decide how you'll charge before you decide what to buy, get the battery warranty in writing, and ask for drive-away prices on the cars you like.
