For a tradie, the first question isn't the brand. It's the shape. A van keeps tools dry, locked and organised; a ute carries dirt, timber and a trailer; a cab chassis takes whatever tray or body the job needs. Get that call right and the vehicle works for you every day. Get it wrong and you'll spend every day working around it.
We picked five Adelaide dealerships from CDR's researched profiles whose stock and services suit tradies, from used van specialists to new-vehicle franchises, spread from Glenelg East to Edinburgh North. Treat it as a shortlist to start from, and check current stock and pricing on each dealer's own website.
What South Australian rules mean for a work vehicle
South Australia gives used-car buyers, including demonstrator buyers, a cooling-off period of 2 clear business days, and Saturdays count. Cancelling costs the lesser of 2% or $100. It can be waived, but only on a witnessed form, and deposits are capped at 10%. It's a sound protection that comes with buying from a licensed dealer.
SA's statutory used-car warranty is set by price rather than age: over $6,000 you get 3 months or 5,000 km, from $3,001 to $6,000 it's 2 months or 3,000 km, and at $3,000 or less there's none, though the car must be roadworthy. Stamp duty is worth checking too. RevenueSA's scale for commercial vehicles such as utes and vans tops out at $3 per $100 over $2,000, below the $4 per $100 charged on sedans, wagons and 4WDs over $3,000, so use the official calculator on the exact vehicle.
Tow ratings and the paperwork
If you tow, tell the dealer what you'll pull and get it written down. It helps the dealer match you to the right vehicle, and the ACCC treats a vehicle that can't tow what the buyer told the dealer they needed as a possible major failure, so your needs are protected. The trailer's loaded mass must also stay within the lowest of the towbar rating, the vehicle's towing capacity, the trailer's capacity and the tyre ratings, as Transport for NSW sets out.
Settle the shape first. The right dealership makes the rest of the job easy.

- SA cooling-off lasts 2 clear business days for used cars and demos, and Saturdays count.

The bottom line
Settle the shape first: van, ute or cab chassis. Then pick the kind of dealership that suits how you work, whether that's a used specialist that workshop-tests its stock, a big multi-brand yard or a franchise with factory servicing. Whichever you choose, ask for the tow rating and the warranty in writing, and you'll drive away in a vehicle that's ready for work.
Quick answers
Is there a cooling-off period on a used ute in South Australia?
Yes. SA gives 2 clear business days for used vehicles, including demonstrators, and Saturdays count. Cancelling costs the lesser of 2% or $100.
What statutory warranty applies to a used work vehicle in SA?
It depends on price: over $6,000, 3 months or 5,000 km; $3,001 to $6,000, 2 months or 3,000 km; $3,000 or less, none, though the vehicle must be roadworthy.
Is stamp duty cheaper on a ute in SA?
Commercial vehicles such as utes and vans are charged on a scale that tops out at $3 per $100 over $2,000, compared with $4 per $100 for non-commercial vehicles over $3,000. Check the classification with RevenueSA's calculator.
Why should I tell the dealer what I'll tow?
It helps the dealer match you to the right vehicle, and the ACCC treats a vehicle that can't tow what the buyer told the dealer they needed as a possible major failure, so putting your towing needs in writing protects you.
Can I claim a work vehicle on tax?
That depends on your business and how the vehicle is used. Speak to your accountant or a registered tax agent before you buy.
