More seats, more boot: five Gold Coast dealerships for families

From a family-run SUV yard near the border to a people-mover specialist in Arundel, five Gold Coast dealerships whose stock and services suit families, and what Queensland's rules mean when you're buying the family car.

The moment usually arrives in a car park. A second child seat won't fit beside the first, the pram takes the whole boot, and the weekly shop now needs a strategy. A family car has to solve problems a single buyer never thinks about, and the wrong one keeps reminding you every school morning.

We picked five Gold Coast dealerships from CDR's researched profiles whose stock and services suit families, spread from Tugun in the south to Arundel in the north. They cover new and used, small budgets and bigger ones, and one specialist in seven and eight seaters. Stock changes daily, so check each dealer's own website before you load the kids into the car.

Bring the car seat to the test drive

Count the child seats you need now and the ones you'll need in three years, then take them with you. Three seats across usually needs a wide rear bench and enough top tether anchor points, so check the owner's manual and test-fit rather than trusting the brochure. If you want a third row, check its anchor points and how much boot is left with it in use.

Safety ratings deserve the same care. ANCAP recommends choosing the highest rating possible with a datestamp no older than six years, and notes its test criteria become more demanding every three years. On a used family car, the year the rating was issued matters as much as the number of stars.

Family SUVs near the border

Tugun Cars · Tugun, Queensland

Tugun Cars is a family-run used car yard at 482 Golden Four Drive, Tugun, a short drive from Coolangatta Airport. SUVs make up the largest share of its 20 to 50 vehicles, alongside hatchbacks and the occasional ute, from brands such as Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi.

Finance is available, and extended warranty options of 12, 36 or 60 months sit on top of the statutory dealership warranty. Cars are sold with PPSR documentation and a Queensland roadworthy certificate, or a Blue Slip for NSW buyers. It's open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 8:30am to 2pm.

The people-mover specialist

Don Frost Car Sales · Arundel, Queensland

Don Frost Car Sales at 12 Sinclair Street, Arundel, describes itself as an import car and people mover specialist, and its profile names large families needing seven or eight seats. Stock covers eight-seat vans and people movers, Japanese imports and general used cars, with fewer than 20 vehicles typically on hand.

The site's price filter spans roughly $9,000 to $59,000. Finance is available through a partner lender, and trade-ins and warranty are offered. Imported vehicles can differ from local-delivery cars on parts, servicing and compliance, so ask the team to talk you through the history of the car you like.

Affordable wagons from a small family yard

Auto Sellers · Molendinar, Queensland

Auto Sellers is a family-owned used car dealership at Precision Drive, Molendinar. Its stock leans toward wagons and hatchbacks from makes such as Holden, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi, with advertised prices spanning roughly $4,990 to $32,990, excluding government charges.

Finance is available, extended warranty options are on offer, and the dealership buys all makes and models with free valuations. It's a compact yard of 20 to 50 vehicles, so the range turns over and it pays to check back. Ask about the warranty options, inspection history and drive-away price on any car you like.

By appointment, with a workshop behind it

Ashmore Used Cars · Ashmore, Queensland

Ashmore Used Cars is a family-owned dealership that sees buyers by appointment. Its stock, typically fewer than 20 vehicles, is weighted toward wagons, SUVs and hatches from makes such as Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia and Subaru, with advertised prices from about $8,999 to $30,000.

The dealer states each car comes with a current roadworthy certificate, a PPSR certificate and clear title. Finance and an extended used-car warranty can be arranged, and its own workshop handles maintenance, diagnostics and brakes. Because it works by appointment, call ahead to book a time and confirm the location.

Queensland rules for the family car

  • Used cars from a dealer have a 1 business day cooling-off period, ending at 5pm on the dealer's next trading day. Cancelling costs $100, and the right ends if you drive the car away.
  • Class A used cars, under 160,000 km and built 10 years or less before sale, carry a statutory warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km. Class B cars get 1 month or 1,000 km.
  • Duty on a car up to $100,000 is $2 per $100 for a hybrid or electric car and $3 per $100 for 1 to 4 cylinders, so a $40,000 hybrid attracts $800 and a four-cylinder $1,200.
  • CTP is included in Queensland registration.
  • Run a $2 PPSR check on any used car before you pay.

The bottom line

The right family car is the one that fits your seats, your boot and your budget, in that order. The Gold Coast gives you a used SUV yard at Tugun, a new-car showroom with a people mover in Robina, an eight-seat specialist in Arundel and two small family yards in Molendinar and Ashmore. Test-fit the seats, check the safety rating's datestamp and ask for the drive-away price, and the right family car will make itself obvious.

Quick answers

Is there a cooling-off period when buying a used car in Queensland?

Yes, for used cars from a dealer. It runs for 1 business day, to 5pm on the dealer's next trading day, costs $100 to use, and ends if you drive the car away. If you weren't given the cooling-off form, the period is 7 days.

What statutory warranty applies to a used family car in Queensland?

Class A cars, under 160,000 km and built 10 years or less before sale, get 3 months or 5,000 km. Class B cars, with 160,000 km or more or older than 10 years, get 1 month or 1,000 km.

How much stamp duty will I pay on a family car in Queensland?

On a car valued up to $100,000, duty is $2 per $100 for a hybrid or electric car and $3 per $100 for a 1 to 4 cylinder car. Use the Queensland duty calculator for your exact figure.

How old should a family car's ANCAP rating be?

ANCAP recommends the highest rating possible with a datestamp no older than six years, and notes that test criteria become more demanding every three years.

Should I take my child seats to the dealership?

Yes. Test-fitting your own seats is the only reliable way to check they fit side by side, reach the anchor points and leave room for everyone.
